Lately the kids have gotten into asking “would you rather?” questions. Like this:
7yo: “Mom, would you rather be a baby or a really old person but in very good health?”
Me: “A really old person in very good health.”
7yo [puzzled]: “why?”
Me: “Because when you’re old you have a lot of wisdom and life experience.”
7yo: “I would rather be a baby.”
Me: “Well, I guess you’re closer to being a baby than a really old person.”
7yo: “You are too.”
Me: “Oh really? How old do you think a really old person is?”
7yo: “50?”
Me: [Uproarious laughter]

I’ve over-scheduled the children. Maybe it’s in response to the months and months of screen time and staying home, but all of a sudden activities are available and they all look fun. Here’s the list for 7yo: piano, tennis, basketball, soccer, carpentry, Chinese, math, math circle, and swimming. School is also in-person for 2.5 hours a day, so it’s a lot of drop-offs and pick-ups. I set alarms for myself so I don’t forget the kids somewhere. Yes, I’m nuts.
My zeal in signing up for everything was mostly because I wanted to give the kids more time outside with other kids. It’s nice to hear over dinner that their “roses” from the day are the fruits of my over-scheduling. That said, I fully expect to drop a lot of these once the school schedule and life normalize.
It doesn’t look like our schools will fully re-open this year. There has been a lot of angst around this but part of doing so safely requires purchasing furniture and hiring more teachers, both of which take time. I’m just happy that fall 2021 is looking more normal.
This week I rescheduled a canceled Hawaii trip from 2020. Husband and I are eligible for vaccines starting next Thursday. Slowly and surely, things are coming back.
